Can you guess who used to live in the US and whoโs a big Married at First Sight addict?

Copper prices have hit record highs this week, climbing past $13,000 per tonne and itโs something that matters more than you might think for construction, energy, and sustainable developments.
So whatโs going on?
๐ Whatโs driving the surge
Copper has been on a sharp rise since October, largely due to disruptions at major mines in places like Chile and Indonesia. With strikes and reduced output continuing, supply is tightening just as demand keeps growing.
At the same time, copper is being pulled in more directions than ever. Itโs essential for electrical systems, renewable energy, EVs, and grid infrastructure and demand is also rising fast from AI data centres and defence applications.
Add in concerns over potential US import tariffs, and buyers have been stockpiling copper wherever they can, pushing prices even higher.
โก Why it matters to construction & energy
Copper is everywhere in modern developments, from wiring and power distribution to solar and low-carbon technologies. Rising prices mean:
โข Increased pressure on material costs
โข More volatility in supply chains
โข A growing need for early planning and smarter procurement
While some analysts suggest the market may be running a little hot on speculation, most agree that long-term demand for copper isnโt going anywhere, especially as electrification and the green transition continue.
๐ฎ Looking ahead
Many of the worldโs copper mines are ageing, and new ones take years to develop, so tight supply could be a longer-term challenge. For our industry, staying aware of these trends helps projects stay resilient, informed, and better prepared.
Keeping an eye on whatโs happening upstream helps us make better decisions downstream.
